BMW confirms Efficient Dynamics production

bmwed630opt 450x253 BMW confirms Efficient Dynamics production

Sure, BMW is going to build a small, urban electric car – the Megacity – in a few years, but we’re pretty sure there are a lot of Bimmer drivers who won’t much care for that little thing, no matter what the powertrain.
For them, BMW has announced a second treat today: the Vision Efficient Dynamics (VED) concept will indeedmake the jump to production form.
We first saw the VED a little over a year ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009 and BMW says the concept was met with an “overwhelming response.” Little surprise, then, that BMW was interested in building this for the people – well, people who can afford the $200,000, give or take, the car will likely cost when it come to market in a few years.
Since the VED contained a fair bit of “completely or virtually production-ready components,” BMW is confidently giving out media test drives at the Leipzig trade fair center of a road-ready technology showcase vehicle based on the VED.

2012 BMW 650i Convertible a no-show in LA

p90066865highres 630op1 450x300 2012 BMW 650i Convertible a no show in LA

BMW wanted to get in on the LA Auto Show festivities, so it dropped most of the details on the 2012 650i convertible without trotting the drop-top onto the show floor. We say “most” of the details, because pricing, options and EPA numbers are still MIA.
What we do know is the new Sixer’s sheetmetal is inspired by the 6 Series Coupe Concept from Paris and is the same model we spied back in October. If you’re up on BMW’s nonsensical numerological nomenclature the 650i is packing the automaker’s twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 sending 400 horsepower (peaking at 6,400 rpm) and 450 pound-feet of torque (from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm) through an eight speed automatic or six-speed manual. Naturally, power is sent to the rear wheels, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds and the de rigueur electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
As expected, BMW has stuck with a traditional cloth top which can be opened in 19 seconds and closed in a claimed 24 seconds up to speeds of 25 mph. A new optional full-color heads-up display complete with 3D graphics and the new iDrive 10.2-inch screen are part of the package. Sales are set to begin this spring and full details are available in the press release below the fold.

BMW Individual teams up with Steinway for 7 Series Composition

Some may deride it as dressed-up plastic – and in some cases it is exactly that – but piano black lacquer trim is now regularly seen in luxury automobile interiors. BMW’s custom-appointment division, however, has taken things a step further.
Teaming up with Steinway & Sons, BMW Individual presents the 7 Series Composition. The unique trim level can be ordered in either an ebony or ivory finish with a special three-layer clearcoat.
A gold pinstripe and special 20-inch wheels further distinguish the exterior, while the passenger compartment is decked out in merino leather (black or white to contrast, not match, the exterior), lambswool carpets, Alcantara headliner, special embroidery, and, of course, piano black trim.
Though the images in the gallery below show a hybrid model, BMW Individual will similarly equip any car in the 7 Series range for the big concerto. Details in the press release after the jump.

Rumormill: BMW reconsidering larger SUV for U.S. market?

2011bmwx5031 1265514954 630op 450x300 Rumormill: BMW reconsidering larger SUV for U.S. market?

Judging from the whispers making their way around the interwebs, BMW may be interested in rekindling theX7 flame. The company was one of many corporations that took part in a global summit in Seoul to discuss how to rebalance global trade away from a U.S.-dependent market. But while many of the participants are keen to shift their attentions toward economies in China and Germany, BMW seemed to think that the U.S. would be back on its feet and buying sooner rather than later.
The automaker even went so far as to say that it hadn’t completely nixed the idea of introducing another larger SUV to its North American lineup.
That means that the X7, a massive vehicle killed off in 2008, may not be completely off of the table. Throwing another SUV into the company’s portfolio wouldn’t seem to be in keeping with BMW’s new commitment to building ever more efficient vehicles, though you never know.
Just because we like to think that we live in a post-SUV world doesn’t mean American buyers don’t love their massive machines.

BMW Unscripted presents: Sabine Schmitz “Queen of the Nürburgring” video

When we think of the best jobs on earth, professions like Formula 1 driver come to mind. Taxi driver doesn’t usually come to mind for most, but hot-footed Sabine Schmitz drives a different kind of cab.
The speed-loving young lady drives a BMW M5 around the Nürburgring, and not just for fun – she gets paid to drive adrenaline junkies around the ‘Ring at high speeds, and she’s so good at what she does that she’s earned the nickname “Queen of the Nürburgring.” Schmitz’s accomplishments don’t end with her taxi job, either – she’s also won 45 races at the Nordschleife, or 45 more races than any of us.
BMW featured Schmitz in it’s Unscripted series, “a series about people, talking about their life, passion and joy with the brand BMW.” Hit the jump to watch Schmitz ply her trade on the world’s most famous track, and try not to get jealous of one of the world’s best jobs. Her office does, after all, take the size and shape of a BMW M5, and that certainly can’t suck.

BMW celebrates 25 years of all-wheel drive

03 awd 1288120224 450x281 BMW celebrates 25 years of all wheel drive

BMW says that after 25 years, one in four of the company’s vehicles is sold with xDrive all-wheel drive. The German carmaker currently sells a total of 45 models that put power to all four tires, and it says that figure may rise in the near future.
In order to celebrate just how far the company’s all-wheel drive system has come over the past quarter decade, BMW has rolled out a quick stroll down memory lane. The first BMW to wear an X on its trunk debuted in 1985 and offered buyers a vehicle that was as capable when the road turned slippery as it was when the tarmac grew twisty.
Since then, BMW says that it has worked to give all of its all-wheel-drive vehicles the same rear-wheel bias as the rest of its products to maintain the now classic BMW driving feel. Hit the jump to see the full press release for yourself, and be sure to check out the gallery full of vintage BMW goodies.

Rossin-Bertin Vorax guns for entry into supercar club with BMW V10 power

web630 rossin bertin vorax 1 450x273 Rossin Bertin Vorax guns for entry into supercar club with BMW V10 power

Wiesmann may have been forced to switch from V10 power to the new twin-turbo V8 for their top-of-the-line MF5, but a Brazilian upstart apparently thinks it can secure an adequate supply of ten-cylinder BMWengines even after they’re discontinued. That’s what’s powering the vehicle you see here.
The Rossin-Bertin Vorax is set to debut at the São Paulo Auto Show later this month. It features a carbon fiber body over an aluminum chassis, cradling the Bavarian ten-pot in two states of trim: naturally aspirated with 570 horsepower, or supercharged with 750. The former is said to be good for a 3.8-second 0-62 mph time and a 205 mph top end. The latter marginally improves the acceleration time to 3.6 despite its 180-horse boost, but supposedly raises the top end to 231 mph. Of course, those figures are likely theoretical, as the vehicle appears to exist only in renderings at the moment.
Bankrolled by meat industry scion Natolino Bertin, Jr. and realized by former General Motors designer Fharys Rossin, the Vorax coupe is targeted to hit the market late 2011 or early 2012. A convertible version is slated to follow a year later, with overall production targeted at 500-1000 units in all and prices hovering around $400k.

eBay Find of the Day: 1995 BMW M3 CSL Lightweight is ultra rare, ultra tasty

01 csl 630 402x300 eBay Find of the Day: 1995 BMW M3 CSL Lightweight is ultra rare, ultra tasty

We know we already ran an eBay Find of the Day, but since you couldn’t actually drive that one, we thought it only fair to bring you another. File this one under “D” for “Don’t see that every day.” For a Buy It Now price of $49,000, you can lay your loving mitts on a genuine 1995 BMW M3 CSL Lightweight. According to the seller, the vehicle has never been raced or abused, and the photos make the factory-built racer look like a slice of cherry pie. There are a scant 36,619 miles on the clock, and the ad makes it clear that this particular example needs nothing but a driver behind the wheel. A driver with a flush bank account, that is.
If you’re wondering why we’ve gone all drooling ape over this car, you should probably know that this is one of the rarer M3 models out there. The seller notes that there were just 100 of these particular racers imported to the States, each with weight-adding bits like the spare tire sent to the dumpster in an attempt to keep weight as low as possible. Reports vary as to exactly how many pounds BMW managed to shed from the standard car, but estimates say that the models hit the scales at around 200-300 lbs less than their regular counterparts. Throw in even stiff springs and a host of go-fast parts that were user-installable for a little extra track dominance and you’ve got the beast you see above.

First Drive: 2011 BMW X3

lead1bmwx32011fd 450x298 First Drive: 2011 BMW X3

Long before the segment-bending X6, BMW’s crossover strategy was simple: offer the utility of a traditional SUV but in a package that’s not only luxurious, but fun to drive. The original X5 Sport UtilityActivity Vehicle kicked things off in 1999, and only a few years later, the smaller X3 arrived.
Now, luxury crossovers are a dime a dozen, and automakers are clamoring to be a part of the small CUV segment. In just the past few years, we’ve been introduced to the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLK, Volvo XC60and Infiniti EX35, among others. But as the X3 aged, its unusually harsh suspension and not-so-great interior plagued sales. In 2004, BMW moved roughly 35,000 X3s off dealer lots, and just last year, that number dropped to less than 10,000. Things aren’t looking good for 2010, either.
Instead of trying to reinvent the formula, BMW has improved on the X3′s original idea by offering more refinement, top-notch driving dynamics and heaps of technology focused on efficiency and connectivity. The end result is a compact crossover ready to regain its spot at the head of the class. Find out if BMW succeeded after the jump.

BMW’s M division releases more details, images of upcoming 1 Series M Coupe

web630 5 1m teaserbatch2 450x300 BMWs M division releases more details, images of upcoming 1 Series M Coupe

Fans of the original BMW M3 might not be enamored by the current V8 model, but the upcoming 1 Series M Coupe promises to bring it back to the source. The Bavarian automaker has released new information on the more compact M ahead of its full release in December ahead of the Detroit Auto Show where it’ll be finally revealed to the public.
The 1 Series M Coupe packs a 340-horsepower version of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter six from the Z4 sDrive35iS in a package weighing about 3,300 pounds, with power fed to the wheels exclusively through a six-speed manual. This a departure from the “bare-bones” M3 GTS that packs a dual-clutch gearbox.
Pricing is slated to come in between those of the existing 135i and M3, placing it somewhere around the $45k mark. Click below to check out the updated gallery of teaser images, including some new swirly ones.

BMW announces pricing for 2011 X3

011 2011 bmw x3 paris 450x300 BMW announces pricing for 2011 X3

We’re about to drive the 2011 BMW X3, but before we get behind the wheel, BMW has announced pricing for its next-gen. cute ‘ute, and as before, the new CUV will be offered in two trims. The base X3 xDrive28i, which features a 240 horsepower inline-six, will start at $37,625. The more powerful xDrive35i, which boasts a 300-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine, starts $41,925. Both models come standard with all-wheel drive and BMW’s eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2011 BMW X3 will arrive in dealer showrooms at the end of 2010, and both models will be available at launch.
Additionally, Blackberry users will have something to be excited about. The X3 is fitted with technology to pull loads of utility out of its smartphone integration. The navigation screen can display emails when the car is stationary, and when it’s in motion, the system utilizes a text-to-speech program to read messages through the audio system.
The base price of the 2011 BMW X3, even though the car has been refreshed and features more standard items, is less than the 2010 model it replaces. It’s a $2,100 price drop down from the 2010 base MSRP of $39,725.

Class action suit alleges BMW N54 turbo engine unsafe, causes Unintended Deceleration

lead1bmw335ireview2010 450x298 Class action suit alleges BMW N54 turbo engine unsafe, causes Unintended Deceleration

The award-winning BMW N54 inline-six has been a hit around the world since it made its debut in the 2006 E90 335i. The twin-turbocharged engine produces around 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque and many have actually suggested that the Bavarian automaker’s power figures have been conservative. When it came out, BMW promised this engine would virtually eliminate turbo lag, increase performance and improve fuel economy at the same time. In fact, it was so confident in its new engine that it spread it around, adding it to its 1, 3 and 5 Series cars, along with its Z4 sports cars and X6 crossovers.
Unfortunately, the N54 has also seen its fair share of owner complaints. Most notably, unhappy BMW drivers allege having two very important issues with the wündermill; the high-pressure fuel pump has a very high failure rate and a defect in the design of the turbochargers requires they be tweaked so as not to run at full capacity. Many BMW owners have officially had it with the N54 engine and a class-action lawsuit has kicked into gear.

BMW 1M Coupe stops by Paris, doesn’t even stay for the show

web630 1m tease4 439x300 BMW 1M Coupe stops by Paris, doesnt even stay for the show

Between the 6 Series Coupe concept, the 5 Series Touring wagon and the new X3 crossover, BMW had plenty to show us this year at the Paris Motor Show. But the real surprise, as it turns out, may have been in the French capital during the show, it wasn’t even put on display.
Instead, the Bavarian automaker took its currently-in-progress 1M Coupe out onto the city’s famous tree-lined boulevards, covered up and disguised, but did a suitably Parisian burlesque striptease to give us a glimpse at what to expect.
Aside from the silhouette, all we can see are the front fender, headlamp (which is now taped-up in Zorro-esque fashion for some reason) and part of the air dam – all of which we saw before in the last teaser video – along with a newly-revealed section of the rear bumper and quad-pipe exhaust, plus the wheels protruding from the flared arches.
If previous reports prove accurate, there will only be 2,700 examples on offer, so this may be the best look we’ll get for some time… better check it out in the gallery below.

Paris 2010: BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé looks low, flat and mean

630 bmw 6 concept live 450x300 Paris 2010: BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé looks low, flat and mean

BMW’s press conference at the Paris Motor Show won’t take place until later today, but the boys from Bavaria left their Concept 6 Series Coupé hanging around on the display’s massive curved plinth.
While we couldn’t finagle our way inside to take a gander at the interior (at least not yet), the crisply styled GT clearly foreshadows the nearly-here 6 Series production model. The attractive and surprisingly large coupe borrows bits from Beijing’s Grand Coupe concept as well as the new 5 Series, particularly in the nose.
When it arrives next year, the serial 6′er will likely be powered by BMW’s range of turbocharged and naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines, with eight-cylinder motivation reserved for the next M6.

Paris 2010: BMW X3 is new yet familiar

011 2011 bmw x3 parisopt 450x300 Paris 2010: BMW X3 is new yet familiar

BMW has whisked the sheets off its 2011 X3, and the second-generation crossover looks suspiciously like its predecessor. Beyond a seemingly endless parade of spy shots over the last couple of years, that’s predictable, as the Spartanburg-built X3 has been a considerable sales success for the German automaker.
While the sheetmetal stays largely the same, the lineup receives new engines and an eight-speed automatic gearbox that’s set to spread like kudzu throughout the automaker’s offerings. The X3 also becomes the first model in BMW’s growing X franchise to adopt electric power steering (the automaker’s controversial variable sports steering rack is optional), as well as optional Damper Control and Dynamic Drive Control (as seen on its range of sedans and sports cars).
In addition to the new sheetmetal, BMW promises added rear seat room, addressing one of the vehicle’s key shortcomings for the North American market.

Review: 2011 BMW 550i

lead1bmw550ireview2011 450x298 Review: 2011 BMW 550i

More than one mile above sea level, located in the heart of Sequoia National Park, is the General Sherman tree. This nearly three-hundred foot tall Giant Sequoia is considered the largest tree in the world, as based on total volume. More impressive than its mass is its age – scientists believe it is between 2,300 and 2,700 years old. Giant Sequoias have prospered over centuries, while countless lesser trees have come and gone, because they posses very unique qualities.
Their foot-thick bark allows them to resist fire, and their shallow roots take advantage of rain showers during periods of drought. And, in an interesting twist of natural survival, their tall canopies effectively block the sun, preventing competitors from taking hold and surviving in the darkened shadows at their base.
The BMW 5 Series is in a similar position. The long-established benchmark mid-size sport sedan finds itself in a constant battle with competitors trying to push it aside in an effort to capture its territory. Instead of resting on its laurels, BMW re-engineers the four-door once every eight years to conform to a changing and ever crowding segment.

Paris Preview: BMW unwraps 6 Series Coupe Concept

01 bmw 6 series concept paris 2010 630op 423x300 Paris Preview: BMW unwraps 6 Series Coupe Concept

Like so many “concepts” from BMW, the 6 Series Coupe bound for the Paris Motor Show is a concept in name alone. What you’re looking at is BMW’s next GT, and even a cursory glance proves that the Bangleization of BMW is officially over.
Set to be based on the 5 Series’ underpinnings and taking several cues from the Grand Coupe conceptshown in Beijing, the next BMW 6 Series takes the brand’s new upright grille, frames it with a set of full-LED headlamps and than caps things off with a more contoured rump. We’re not going to pass judgement on the design until we see it in person, but like the last 6er, this new GT appears to be a love it or loathe it affair.
On the contrary, the interior is an airy, organic environment, complete with an asymmetrical center console tilted towards the driver, a new navigation display and a host of aluminum and leather accents that are several steps beyond what’s currently on offer from BMW. We’re particularly digging the redesigned steering wheel and the waterfall of material that connects the dash to the transmission tunnel.
BMW isn’t giving up specifics on dimensions or engines – this is a “concept” after all – but expect the 2012 BMW 6 Series to be slightly lower and marginally wider than the current model. Power will be supplied by BMW’s current array of naturally aspirated and turbocharged inline sixes, with the next M6 outputting over 550 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. The standard 6 should be in showroom early next year, with the M6 to arriving in late 2012 and the soft-top due out in late 2011.

Lumma Design increases its carbon footprint with BMW 7 Series package

web630 lumma design bmw serie 71 450x285 Lumma Design increases its carbon footprint with BMW 7 Series package

No matter which way you look at it, the latest BMW 7 Series is leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor in terms of styling. But if you’re looking for something a little more aggressive, Lumma Design has an answer for you: A lot of carbon fiber ought to do the trick.
Much as it has done for just about everything else made in the Fatherland, the German tuner has released a raft of carbon bits for the flagship Bimmer. Included in the package are a new grille, door handles, door mirror housings, front bumper with integrated LEDs, a quad-tip exhaust and massive 22-inch wheels riding on ultra low-profile rubber.
Lumma being more into design than engine tuning, the mechanical bits of the car remain untouched, but you can get a closer look in the gallery below.
