SEMA 2010: 2011 Honda CR-Z Mugen is a rare oddity

01 mugen 630 450x300 SEMA 2010: 2011 Honda CR Z Mugen is a rare oddity
Heads up, CR-Z fans: Honda has announced that the company will be releasing a mere 300 Mugenaccessory kits for the Japanese sport hybrid. The ultra-rare bodywork includes bits like a completely revised front fascia with an altered grille design, a massive rear spoiler and flashy 17-inch rollers. Under the hood things stay nearly completely stock, though Honda has swapped the blaséplastic oil filler cap with a billet aluminum piece. Astounding, we know.
But all of that pales in comparison to the interior work. Along with a new shift knob, Honda has installed “sport mats.” We aren’t entirely sure what makes a floor mat sporty, but we’ll take their word for it.
The body kits will be available in all five CR-Z colors. So far, there’s no word on how much the kits will cost, but we can’t imagine they’ll go cheap. Hit the jump for the full press blast.

Honda’s next mini machine to debut in Thailand

01 nsv 630 450x281 Hondas next mini machine to debut in Thailand
Honda is set to pull the sheets off of a the production version of its new sub-compact concept at this year’s Thailand International Motor Expo. Originally seen in concept guise at the New Delhi show earlier this year, the New Small Vehicle Concept is set to take markets in both India and Thailand by storm with its $10,000 price tag and adorable stature. Honda has a long history of showing off “concepts” that are little more than production versions with fancy bodywork, and that appears to be the case here. From what we can tell, the retail hatch will be nearly identical to this show queen.
More details on the concept are likely to surface after the New Small Vehicle gets a full unveil later this month. Right now, we don’t know what Honda has planned in terms of drivetrains or whether or not the company will share the new model with the rest of the world.
Looks like a mighty-fine Aveo fighter to us..

SEMA 2010: Bisimoto Honda CR-Z is a 533-horsepower madhouse

01 bisi 630 450x300 SEMA 2010: Bisimoto Honda CR Z is a 533 horsepower madhouse
The team from Bisimoto has taken to curing the Honda CR-Z hybrid of its anemia by prescribing massive doses of forced induction. The stock 1.5-liter four-cylinder was extracted and rebuilt using Arias pistons and a Bisimoto valvetrain, but the star of the show is that massive billet Turbonetics turbo. It shoves ample amounts of air through a 70-millimeter custom throttle body at a rate that has to rival most jet engines. The whole kit and caboodle is good for a staggering 533 horsepower, which helps explain why a car that started life with a 0-60 mph time of 10 seconds now requires a parachute to reduce its inertia.
Is this proof positive that the CR-Z has the kind of tunability that made the CRX legendary, or simply an example of cash conquering all handicaps? Decide for yourself as you scroll through our high-res image gallery below.

Honda boosts Insight fuel economy by lengthening start-stop ability?

2009 insight ex 009 630 450x264 Honda boosts Insight fuel economy by lengthening start stop ability?
Honda has not yet given up in the entry-level hybrid fight. There’s the new, not-for-U.S. Jazz (Fit) Hybrid, for one thing, but the older Insight hybrid isn’t being left in the dust, either. Autocar reports that some of the lessons from the Jazz are being applied to the Insight – most importantly that the “stop” time of the Insight’s stop-start cycle can now be up to 90 seconds long in Eco Mode.
Because of “obscure patenting reasons” that made the system assume a worst-case humidity situation, the previous limit was just 30 seconds. This change can save a lot of gas in city driving. There are no new mile-per-gallon numbers to tout just yet, and the change isn’t likely to affect America’s EPA figures (the government agency’s test cycle doesn’t recognize the benefits of start-stop), but it’s a nice, green upgrade nonetheless.

Honda UK shows off 2011 Civic hatch with Type-R cues

01 uk civic 630 450x264 Honda UK shows off 2011 Civic hatch with Type R cues
Honda has just released details on what buyers in the UK can expect to see from the 2011 Civic. The company has kept the changes to its spacey-looking five-door largely cosmetic, including a new grille up front. The company says that piece borrows cues from the legendary Type R, and if you squint your eyes enough, you can almost see the resemblance. A new range of wheels is also available for next year ranging in size from 16 to 17 inches depending on engine and trim level. There’s also a new Ionized Bronze paint color available across the lineup.
Inside, Honda has moved to up the ante ever so slightly. SE and ES trims will now boast seats that are covered in half fabric and half Alcantara, while the Si guise now comes with heated front thrones. Otherwise, the vehicle stays much the way it was for 2010. Under the hood, buyers are still greeted with the familiar 1.4 and 1.8-liter powerplants, and the horsepower figures haven’t moved from last year’s numbers, either. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Honda prices 2011 Fit Hybrid at $19,310; cheapest gas-electric in Japan

honda jazz hybridlead 450x300 Honda prices 2011 Fit Hybrid at $19,310; cheapest gas electric in Japan
Despite the fact that Honda has no plans – at least not yet – to export its 2011 Honda Fit (Jazz) Hybrid to the U.S., we’ve still kept a close eye on the automaker’s subcompact gas-electric. From the rumors thatswirled around back in 2006 to its on-stage debut at the Paris Motor Show, we’ve never lost sight of the Fit Hybrid and its overall importance in the gas-electric segment. Now, as the vehicle launches in Japan, we’re pleased to note that Reuters is reporting that Honda has kept its promise and priced the Fit Hybrid at a mere1.59 million yen ($19,310 U.S. at current exchanges rate). This makes it the cheapest gas-electric car available in Japan.
Honda reports that pre-orders in Japan for the bargain-priced hybrid have reached nearly 10,000 units. Toppling the nation’s best-seller, the Toyota Prius, though, will require even more consumer interest than that. Under Japanese testing methods, the Fit Hybrid receives a 70.6 mile-per-gallon fuel economy rating, equal to that of the company’s Insight.

Honda releases more Fit Hybrid images, details

honda jazz hybridlead 450x300 Honda releases more Fit Hybrid images, details
Honda has told us it will not be producing a Honda Fit Hybrid for the U.S. market, but it also once told us thatthere will be no Honda Jazz Hybrid. What you are looking at above is exactly that – an EU-market Honda Jazz with a gas-electric drivetrain. The new, more verdant model is set to make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show, and Honda has just released an expanded array of images and more details about the eco-minded hatch. While the Japanese automaker hasn’t divulged the car’s full specs, there are a few things we do know:
  • Interior space remains largely uncompromised, as the battery pack and other hybrid hardware is under the trunk floor.
  • The IMA mild hybrid motor and control systems are shared with the Insight and CR-Z.
  • Just like the Insight, the Jazz Hybrid utilizes a 1.3-liter gasoline engine under the hood.
The U.S. 2010 Honda Fit model is rated at 27 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, and we expect the Fit Hybrid to push that urban rating up by more than a few notches. Sadly, this new model remains unlikely to make it to North American shores.

Report: Honda mulling CR-Z convertible?

hondacrz2011 01 1 450x272 Report: Honda mulling CR Z convertible?
According to Road & Track, Honda may have its heart set on cranking out a new droptop sports car to keep the brand alive in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts. Unfortunately, the new racer isn’t likely to be anything like the much-loved S2000. No, instead, R&T‘s sources point to a convertible version of the CR-Z. The recipe calls for the platform to retain its front-wheel-drive layout, though a more powerful drivetrain would likely be fitted to lug around the additional weight of bracing and a folding top.
We’ve heard worse ideas, but we can’t remember when.
If the car made it to production, it would theoretically go toe to toe with the long-reigning Mazda MX-5 in a battle that we can only assume would be over before either car got to the track. Should the CR-Z-based car prove successful, Honda would then look into building a more potent, rear-wheel drive hybrid sports car. You know, what the CR-Z should have been all along.

Honda recalling Accord Crosstour over airbag issue?

01hondacrosstourreview2010opt 450x298 Honda recalling Accord Crosstour over airbag issue?
Honda is set to launch a recall of certain 2010 Accord Crosstour models to “inspect and potentially replace the front passenger airbag.” According to Honda, the recall will cover about 3,340 units in total, some 700 of those in Canada.
The cause for the recall stems from recent testing which revealed a potential problem with the airbag modules not meeting the rules regarding protection of an unbelted, child test dummies in the front seats. They say no incidents have been reported, but Honda is recommending that children under the age of 12 be properly restrained in the vehicle’s rear seat for now.
Honda will notify affected customers by mail but owners can also call their dealer or Customer Relations toll-free at 1-888-946-6329.

First Drive: 2011 Honda Odyssey

lead1odysseyfd2011 450x298 First Drive: 2011 Honda Odyssey
Honda did something silly during the launch of its all-new 2011 Odyssey minivan. The automaker built a large autocross-type “track” in the parking lot of San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium and invited journalists to take its latest eight-passenger family hauler for hot laps. It was an interesting “fish out of water” introduction to Honda’s fourth-generation people mover.
Designed, developed and manufactured in the United States, Honda considers the 2011 model an “American Odyssey.” The domestic development team, owners of 46 Odysseys between them, labored to deliver a minivan with distinctive style, greater interior versatility and improved fuel economy. Did Honda build itself a worthy successor and how did it fare on the autocross?

Review: 2011 Honda CR-Z

hondacrz2011 01opt 450x300 Review: 2011 Honda CR Z
Okay, so the 2011 Honda CR-Z isn’t exactly the modern-day CRX redux that we were all hoping for. Mildly upsetting, yes, but perhaps this disappointment tarnished our initial impression of this newest hybrid offering from Honda. We still have many questions about its form and function, but need to accept the fact that times have changed, Honda’s product strategies have been realigned to the times and the CRX shall remain a modern classic – especially the Si. Besides, this little two-seat hybrid isn’t really all that bad. Really.
What we have here is an inherently good vehicle that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. It only has two seats and its EPA fuel economy numbers are underwhelming. A Ford Fiesta, for example, is more functional, less expensive and gets nearly the same combined fuel economy – at least compared to a manual-equipped CR-Z like our tester.
But don’t write off the CR-Z completely. It may be a tough sell when looked at from a big picture perspective, but on its own, it’s a pretty good little whip. Follow the jump to find out why.

Honda Jazz Hybrid officially unveiled, not fit for U.S.

02eurojazzhybridopt 450x300 Honda Jazz Hybrid officially unveiled, not fit for U.S.
The Japanese and European market Jazz Hybrid has been officially unveiled by Honda. The visual alterations from the standard model are slight, apparently down to tweaked bumpers and headlight glass and a unique Lime Green metallic color. The price premium, however, isn’t. We’re hearing a $4,700 premium over the standard Jazz. Still, that would be the low price baseline in the segment as far as hybrids are concerned in Japan.
The Jazz Hybrid features the same IMA hybrid drivetrain as the CR-Z and Insight, so don’t expect Prius-slaying fuel economy numbers, though Honda claims they will be comparable to the smaller CR-Z.
Earlier this month Honda reiterated the fact that there were no U.S. plans for a Fit Hybrid. However, with the Insight and Civic Hybrid in obvious trouble, Honda devoted to hybrid powertrains and the Fit still a popular option on our shores, we wouldn’t be surprised if that changed. After all, in December 2006 Honda said therewouldn’t be a Fit Hybrid at all. The Fit Hybrid will make its formal debut at the Paris Motor Show next month, but you can have a look at it and the European Jazz Hybrid in the gallery of photos below.

Honda Canada discontinuing Insight and Civic hybrid

stress ball money DS04AP6 450x300 Report: Honda Canada discontinuing Insight and Civic hybrid
It’s no secret that the revived 2010 Honda Insight has been a huge sales disappointment in North America. The once-robust sales of the Civic hybrid have also evaporated in the last two years. Apparently, things are far worse for Honda’s hybrids in Canada where higher fuel prices typically cause people to buy more efficient vehicles.
An unconfirmed report from a Canadian web site indicates that both the Civic hybrid and the Insight are being discontinued there. Checking the Canadian sales charts, the Civic as a whole is one of the top-selling cars in Canada with 31,604 units sold in 2010 through July.
While hybrid sales are not broken out by Honda Canada, we can do a little educated guessing. Since only 643 of those Civic sales were imports and the hybrids come from Japan, we can figure that those 643 were the hybrid models. Similarly, Canadians only bought 748 Insights in the same period. When it launched, Honda projected 10,000 annual sales in Canada. Evidently Canadians just aren’t taken with hybrids – even the mighty Prius has only found 2,272 Canadian buyers this year.
Honda hasn’t yet responded to a request for comment on the cancellation of these two models. Apparently, Honda Canada will still proceed with the launch of the CR-Z there, maybe leaving it as the company’s only hybrid. A tip of the hat to Mario!

Honda’s fix for prematurely dying Civic hybrid batteries hurting fuel economy, performance?

honda civic hybrid 1280 07 450x300 Hondas fix for prematurely dying Civic hybrid batteries hurting fuel economy, performance?
Until the past year or so, the Civic Hybrid had been by far the best selling gas-electric model introduced byHonda. However, the second-generation model introduced in 2006 has not been entirely problem-free. There have been several lawsuits against Honda claiming that the Civic doesn’t meet its advertised mileage claims. While those sort of claims are often dubious given their dependency on factors like driving style, climate and terrain, premature battery failures are not.
According to the Los Angeles Times, it appears that 2006-2008 Civic Hybrid models are suffering an abnormally high rate of battery failure at relatively low miles. The nickel-metal-hydride batteries are evidently prematurely losing their ability to hold a charge – particularly in hot weather areas like Arizona and when used in a lot of stop-and-go traffic. The Civic Hybrid has a dual compressor air-conditioning system with an engine driven primary compressor and a smaller electric compressor to keep the system going when the engine is shut during a stop. Using the air conditioning will cause the battery to go through more charge cycles, eventually wearing it down. Read on after the jump for more on why the battery might be failing and how Honda is attempting to address it.

Officially Official: 2011 Honda Odyssey prepares to rock your sippy cups

0122011 honda odyssey debut opt Officially Official: 2011 Honda Odyssey prepares to rock your sippy cups
When Honda pulled the wraps off of its Odyssey Concept at this year’s Chicago Auto Show, we knew it was just a few small tweaks away from being production-ready. Well, four months later, the official details and images have been released, and while the 2011 Odyssey doesn’t go a long way in offering fantastic new innovations for the minivan segment, it packages the whole thing together in what might be the best-looking minivan we have yet to see.
The 2011 Odyssey is lower and wider than the outgoing model, and features what Honda is calling a “lightning bolt” beltline, a feature that was present on the concept van that we saw in Chicago. We aren’t sure if we’re in love with that quirky design element, but one thing’s for sure, you won’t see the origami fold and stepped greenhouse on any other minivan in the shopping mall parking lot. Other new features for the 2011 model year include available HID headlamps up front, new 18-inch alloy wheels, larger 12.6-inch ventilated front disc brakes, revised side mirrors and a power tailgate. Honda has yet to release full performance specs, but we do know that there’s a 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 under the hood, and early estimates state that the top-trim Odyssey Touring Elite should achieve 19 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg(!) on the highway.
Inside, Honda has made the most of the Odyssey’s extra width, offering an additional inch of shoulder room in the front row. What’s most interesting, though, are the three second-row seat configurations, including an all-new wide mode which allows the two side captains chairs to be pulled away from the center seat, meaning three child car seats can fit all across one row. Again, the Odyssey hasn’t really done anything innovative with its interior packaging, but new features like a chilled cool box in the front center console, HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) input, 16.2-inch widescreen entertainment system, 15 upholders and a trash bag holder (yep!) will make the cabin more attractive to consumers who need one heck of an all-around family hauler.

Next-generation Honda Civic may be delayed

00109civicopr Next generation Honda Civic may be delayed
Typically, most automakers stick to a relatively strict five-year product cycle for their highest-selling, most important products. The Honda Civic, for example, debuted in September of 2005, so realistically, a new model should be just around the corner, right? Not exactly.
In an interview with AutoWeek, American Honda executive vice president John Mendel said that changing market conditions and tougher fuel economy and emissions regulations have strongly affected the development of the next-generation Civic, meaning that the new model won’t come until sometime in 2011.AW also reports that the Civic’s redesign has been altered along the way – the new model was supposed to be larger than the current model, but now it has been redesigned to be closer in size to the current one (pictured above).
What’s more, with hot new products like the 2012 Ford Focus on deck, Honda will certainly have to up the ante on the Civic’s level of equipment, style and refinement. The Civic is still one of the world’s best-selling cars: about one million are moved each year. And with the U.S. accounting for approximately one-third of those sales, Honda would be wise to ensure that the next-generation Civic will be attractive enough to keep it in the top tier of high-selling vehicles in the States.

Honda Li Nisn Everus sedan concept

01 everus 630 1272041020 Beijing 2010: Honda Li Nisn Everus sedan concept
The Beijing Motor Show is well under way, and Honda is showing off a new concept slated for the Chinese market. Called the Li Nian Everus, the car is the fruit of a partnership between the Japanese automaker and its Chinese partner, Guangqi Honda Automobile. We don’t have too many details on the sedan other than the fact that at this point, it’s nothing more than a concept.
Judging by the renderings, we’re tempted to guess this thing has more than a little Civic DNA swimming around in its blood stream, though it looks like Honda raided the Acura design department for the car’s less-than-traditional nose and rear-end.
Speaking of the Civic, it would make some sense if Honda swapped a little sheet metal and called it a day. Honda’s compact is sold under the Dongfeng Honda banner, leaving Guangqi Honda Automobile without a comparable model. Our guess is that when the Everus comes to market, it will be slightly more upscale and boast more standard niceties than its sibling.

Honda Four-Door Civic Si

CivicSisedan1 Honda Four Door Civic Si
The new Honda Civic Si model was anounced on Chicago Auto Show. A concept on the Chicago stage but promised for production in the fall, the Civic Si Sedan will share the current Si Coupe’s 197-hp four and six-speed manual transmission, along with its limited-slip differential. New 18-inch wheels jazz up the sedan, and four-piston Brembo brakes increase stopping capability. Honda says 2007 will be the first time that two Si models will be available at the same time in the Honda lineup.

Honda Motor has unveiled the 2007 Civic Type R, a hot version of the Euro Civic hatchback. The new Type R will be powered by the naturally-aspirated, high-revving 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC enginel. VTEC variable valve timing and VTC variable inlet camshaft technology continue to underpin the engine structure. “Hot Hatch” now takes place at a lower 5,200rpm, and continues all the way to 8,000rpm. Max output is now 201 horsepower at 8,000 rpm, compared to 200 horsepower at 7,400 rpm. Acceleration to 62 mph takes 6.6 seconds.
Pricing has yet to be announced for the Type-R. 2007 Honda Civic Type R will go on sale next March in the UK.

Honda Civic Mugen Si Sedan

2007hondacivicmugensis 2007 Honda Civic Mugen Si Sedan
Honda revealed a Civic Mugen Si Sedan prepared by Honda tuner Mugen at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show. The new prototype equipped with a high performance suspension, forged aluminum wheels, aerodynamic body styling and a sport exhaust system. 2007 Honda Civic Mugen Si Sedan planned for production in a limited quantity of 500 units a year and will be available at U.S. dealers starting in spring 2007 with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $30,000.
The track tuned suspension, tested at the Twin Ring Motegi racing circuit in Japan, lowers the vehicle by 0.6 inches with aggressive spring and damper tuning for enhanced handling performance while still maintaining ride comfort. Compared to the stock Civic Si Sedan, front and rear damping force (both bump and rebound) was increased between 8- and 24-percent (the rate varies depending on condition). Lightweight 16.7-pound 18?7.5-inch forged aluminum wheels (27 percent lighter than the stock 17?7 alloy wheel) and high-grip BFGoodrich g-Force KDW 215/40ZR18 summer tires help to further improve handling.
